Those boards are toungue and groove , if you do not remove the popcorn it will be very difficult to locate your studs , you can't just nail into drywall the ceiling wood will fall down .
I glued and nailed the wood to the ceiling.
I will admit it is a big job , but I did a little at a time maybe a 2x2 ft area a day or as I felt , it is not a one day job at all.
Hi , I am lucky and do not have a texture on my wall, they don't tend to do that in Canada , we stick with smooth drywall.
